چکیده

In recent years, depth cameras (such as Microsoft Kinect and ToF cameras) have gained much popularity in computer graphics, visual computing and virtual reality communities due to their low price and easy availability. While depth cameras (e.g. Microsoft Kinect) provide RGB images along with real-time depth information at high frame rate, the depth images often suffer from several artifacts due to inaccurate depth measurement. These artifacts highly degrade the visual quality of the depth frames. Most of these artifacts originate from two main sources – the missing/invalid depth values and fluctuating valid depth values on the generated contents. In this paper, we propose a new depth image enhancement method, for the contents of depth cameras, which addresses these two main sources of artifacts. We introduce a robust 1D Least Median of Squares (1D LMedS) approach to estimate the depth values of those pixels which have missing/invalid depth values. We use a sequence of frames to look for invalid depth values (considered as outliers), and finally, replace those values with stable and more plausible depth values. By doing so, our approach improves the unstable nature of valid depth values in captured scenes that is perceived as flickering. We use selfrecorded and reference datasets along with reference methods to evaluate the performance of our proposed 1D LMedS. Experimental results show improvements both for static and moving parts of a scene.

Depth Data Calibration and Enhancement of Time-of-flight Video-plus-Depth Camera

In this paper, we present a method to calibrate and enhance depth information captured by an infrared (IR)-based time-of-flight video-plus-depth camera called “Kinect camera”. For depth data calibration, we use color and IR images of a chessboard with on-off halogen light sources to calculate camera parameters of the video and IR sensors in the Kinect camera. For depth data enhancement, we intr...

Efficient Depth Enhancement Using a Combination of Color and Depth Information

Studies on depth images containing three-dimensional information have been performed for many practical applications. However, the depth images acquired from depth sensors have inherent problems, such as missing values and noisy boundaries. These problems significantly affect the performance of applications that use a depth image as their input. This paper describes a depth enhancement algorith...

Planelet Transform: A New Geometrical Wavelet for Compression of Kinect-like Depth Images

With the advent of cheap indoor RGB-D sensors, proper representation of piecewise planar depth images is crucial toward an effective compression method. Although there exist geometrical wavelets for optimal representation of piecewise constant and piecewise linear images (i.e. wedgelets and platelets), an adaptation to piecewise linear fractional functions which correspond to depth variation ov...

Depth Image Enhancement using 1D Least Median of Squares

We propose a new method to enhance the depth images from RGB-D sensors, such as Kinects, by filling the missing/invalid values which are reported by those sensors at certain pixels. We introduce a robust 1D least median of squares (1D LMedS) approach to accurately estimate the depth values of those invalid pixels. We use this approach for efficient traversal of each pixel’s depth values over a ...

Robust Depth Estimation from Auto Bracketed Images

As demand for advanced photographic applications on hand-held devices grows, these electronics require the capture of high quality depth. However, under low-light conditions, most devices still suffer from low imaging quality and inaccurate depth acquisition. To address the problem, we present a robust depth estimation method from a short burst shot with varied intensity (i.e., Auto Bracketing)...
